He was introduced to the world of leprosy - a world most people still shun- by Mother Teresa as early as 1975. Since then he has worked for leprosy related causes in the spare time. Unusually for a civil servant he availed of 9 months Study Leave in 1986 to obtain firsthand experience of the leprosy situation existing in the country. This led him to write a monograph entitled “The Vocational Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration of the Leprosy Affected in India”. It is noteworthy that this book was released by Mother Teresa herself who travelled especially to Delhi for this purpose. In the audience of leprologists, bureaucrats, academics were over a dozen healthy teenagers children of leprosy patients and ex-sufferers.
The royalties from his biography on Mother Teresa are donated to a Trust he founded called ‘’The Lepra India Trust.‘’ So far he has donated the equivalent of USD 1,00,000 of his royalty earnings to this Trust. He works passionately to treat street cases who are usually ex-leprosy sufferers. The Trust also provides vocational training to the healthy offspring of ex-leprosy patients. These include training in computer skills and ( for the young women ) beauty training courses. All the work is completely free of any charge.
