Career

Navin B Chawla was a career civil servant of the Indian Administrative Service. His career path of 37 years since 1969 provided him with valuable experience through the course of many challenging and varied assignments. These included the early grounding, common to all IAS officers, in law and order and magisterial functions. From successfully running India’s then largest consumer cooperative (the Super Bazaar), to mid career Secretariat assignments in the Ministries of Labour (1980- 84), the Ministry of Home Affairs (1997), Information & Broadcasting (1992-95), and then as full Secretary in the same Ministry (2004-2005). He was appointed to Chair the city of Delhi’s Electricity Authority. He was appointed as Election Commissioner in 2005. In April 2009 he became India’s 16th Chief Election Commissioner. He completed his term in July 2010 at the constitutionally mandated age of 65.
