Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position is the breastfeeding peer counselor coordinator for St Lucie County WIC Program and coordinates the breastfeeding peer counseling (BPC) program and coordinates the work of breastfeeding peer counselor staff.

 

  • Assists with recruiting and interviewing potential peer counselors in alignment with state and local program policies and standards; assists with training for peer counselors; mentors new peer counselors, providing routine follow-up and guidance; provides ongoing supervision for peer counselor staff.
  • Participates in breastfeeding program meetings; monitors work caseload of peer counselors. Reviews client record notes of peer counselors for adequacy. Documents observation of peer counselors in completion of their phone calls and other duties and provides feedback.
  • Participates in the statewide Peer Counselor Coordinator conference calls monthly.
  • Performs duties utilizing a teamwork approach to assure program objectives are coordinated with other staff to achieve desired results. Cultivates positive work relationships with co-workers and communicates key information to supervisor and co-workers for efficient operations. Maintains client confidentiality and security in accordance DOHP50-10-10 Information Security & Privacy Policy Confidential Information.
  • Provides lactation counseling for clients with problems or concerns that require a high level of breastfeeding expertise.
  • Answers the WIC breastfeeding warm line within 48 hours or the next business day to handle client needs.
  • Coordinates breast pump needs and certification referrals for breastfeeding mothers from local hospitals who are potentially eligible for WIC or already participate on WIC. Coordinates with other Lactation Consultants at hospitals and in the community.

 

  • Receives state-approved training in breastfeeding management. Assists with the annual breastfeeding training of WIC employees and for new employees of WIC and BPC.
  • Assists with the breastfeeding electric pump and multi-user loan program; assures training of nutrition staff in procedures/use of the equipment; assists with maintaining inventory of breast pumps and breastfeeding support accessories/supplies.
  • Monitors cleaning of returned multi-user breast pumps and documentation on logs.
  • Requests supplies for training sessions, peer counselors and other required materials.
  • Completes time in People First, EARS and travel as required.
  • Assists in the completion of nutrition program plan objectives regarding breastfeeding as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • Willing to work before, during and/or beyond your normal work hours in a Special Needs Shelter or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses involving any disaster or threat of disaster
  • Currently have one or more of the following credentials: International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLE) or a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) willing to obtain IBCLC credentials.
  • One year of experience counseling breastfeeding women
  • Proficient in computer skills and applications

 

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree or have completed at least 8 college courses in the Health Sciences
  • Experience working in the WIC department
  • Experience as a supervisor or team leader coordinating people and/or projects
